Colombia beat Nigeria to book q/final spot

11 August 2016, 06:23Israel Ojoko

Sao Paolo - Nigeria’s Dream Team suffered a 2-0 defeat to Wednesday’s opponent Colombia in the final Group B clash at the Rio 2016 Olympics men’s football event played in Sao Paolo.

One goal in each half put Colombia through to the quarter final, with Nigeria, who has already topped the group, unable to get a goal.

A first-half strike from captain Teofilo Gutierrez and a second-half penalty from Dorlan Pabon ensured the South Americans now joined their West African opponents in the quarter-finals.

Siasia, who before the game had hinted on making changes to the starting lineup, replaced Emmanuel Daniel with Daniel Akpeyi among other three changes.

Akpeyi would go on to receive a yellow card in the 62nd minute and did William Ekong and Okechukwu Azubuike in a game dominated by the South Americans.

Nigeria will now play Denmark who finished second from Group A in the quarter final, while Colombia will clash with host Brazil in an all-South America clash.

News24 reported that Nigeria defeated Japan 5-4 in their first game at the Rio Olympics.
