Dalung urges sports bodies to catch them young

29 November 2016, 16:51

Abuja - Youth and Sports Development Minister, Solomon Dalung, has urged all sports federations in Nigeria to identify talent at the grassroots to create a reservoir of talent in the country.

He urged the federations to emulate the Nigerian Gymnastic Federation, which he said was in reaching out to school children at local level to unearth budding talents at a tender age.

Dalung was presenting at the just-concluded sixth edition of International Gymnastics Level System (Children Gymnastic display) Championship held at the National Stadium in Abuja.

Dalung described the event as an initiative that would help determine the future of sports in Nigeria.

“Here gathered are future Olympians, future African champions and Commonwealth champions,” he said.

He assured that the Federal Government was determined to change the face of sports and advised parents to always encourage as well as support their wards to participate in sporting activities.

Nigeria’s sporting fortunes have been on a wane over the years, particularly football.

The national team will not participate at the Africa Cup of Nations in January.
