Dream Team coach targets Olympics medal

15 December 2015, 18:35

Lagos - Nigeria Dream Team assistant coach Fatai Amoo sees no reason why the current youth team cannot emulate the class of 1996 by winning gold at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Nigeria's Under-23s were recently crowned champions at the CAF U23 Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal, earning their ticket to next year's global sporting event, to be held in Rio.

And, Amoo believes the current crop have the quality to go all the way at the Games, telling SuperSport: "Impossible is nothing, it's quite possible the present squad go ahead to win gold at the upcoming 2016 Olympics in Rio as the 96' Atlanta set performed in the years back but not under the present scenario that preceded the side campaign at the just concluded Africa U-23 Cup of Nations in Senegal.

"The motivation for this current squad and coaching crew is low compared with the 1996 Olympic team.

"Of course, we must overhaul the team by getting the best players all over the world not overlooking some shining stars in the present squad.

"Things must change completely in addition to total overhaul of the team as we will be meeting the world best in Rio for us to hope for a repeat performance of 96' Atlanta golden era."
