Mikel hails Courtois for brilliant display gainst Man United

31 December 2015, 16:28

Lagos - Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has showered praise on Belgian shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois, after he kept a clean sheet against Manchester United in the Premier League on Monday night.

The Nigeria international has been enjoying a new lease of life since Dutchman Guus Hiddink took over the managerial reigns from Jose Mourinho, featuring in the last three games and lasting the distance against Man United.

''Asmir Begovic is a fantastic goalkeeper and he did really well when Thibaut was injured, but now he is back, healthy and injury-free, and these are the kind of saves he makes.

''I’d put him up there with the best keepers in the world,'' said Obi Mikel to Chelsea's official webpage.

After 19 rounds, the Premier League champions' hopes of defending the title have all but vanished but Mikel is optimistic that the Londoners can qualify for next season's Champions League if they maintain their momentum.

''I don’t think it’s gone. We’ve got lots of games to catch up and if we keep going in this direction and keeping clean sheets, we will definitely score goals.

''We are down there in the table and he can’t just come in and perform miracles, but we want to get out of it and climb up the table, it’s three games now without losing so that’s a good step,'' added the Chelsea number 12.
