Mikel makes Chelsea history

28 December 2015, 10:46

London - John Obi Mikel has entered Chelsea’s history books as the only 21st century player to feature 350 times in the club’s 110-year history.

The 28-year old was introduced as a 46th-minute replacement for Cesc Fabregas in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge against Watford on Boxing Day, and is also Chelsea’s third-highest foreign appearance maker.

Mikel has played 17 of his 350 Chelsea games under current boss, Guus Hiddink, who took interim charge of the team in 2009 and won the FA Cup with them.

Since his protracted move to Stamford Bridge in 2006, Mikel has played under eight different managers – Jose Mourinho (twice); Avram Grant; Luis Felipe Scolari; Guus Hiddink (twice); Carlo Ancelotti; Andre Villas Boas; Roberto Di Matteo; and Rafael Benitez and has been constant figure in the Chelsea first team, even though he hasn’t always been a regular starter.

He has gone on to win the Premier League twice, four FA Cup titles, two League Cup title, one Uefa Champions League title and one Europa League title.

He has also won the Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria, as well as playing at one World Cup final during this period.
