Mikel named in Nigeria’s Rio football squad

Lagos - Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has been named in Nigeria’s squad for the football event at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Mikel, who is currently in preseason with his club in Austria, will be joined by goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi on the trip to Rio.

Coach Samson Siasia had forwarded a list of 22 players to FIFA as Nigeria’s representatives. Only 18 players are in the squad proper, while four are placed as alternate players.

Nigeria will face Japan, Sweden and Colombia at the group phase of the Games.
