Mikel outstanding as Dream Team beat Denmark to qualify for semifinal

13 August 2016, 22:04Israel Ojoko

Rio - John Obi Mikel scored one goal and provided assist for the other as Nigeria defeated Denmark 2-0 to qualify for the semifinal of the Rio 2016 Olympics football event.

Mikel was very outstanding as his passes was accurate.

The Chelsea midfielder scored his first Olympic goal in the 16th minute off an Imoh Ezekiel cross to put Nigeria ahead with plenty to play for.

Usman Muhammed and Muenfuh Sincere were booked in the 31st and 44th minutes respectively as the Danish fight for an equalizer, but Nigeria took the lead into the break.

Denmark were more purposeful and sharp after the break but it was Nigeria that extended the lead through Aminu Umar, thanks to a Mikel corner kick, as the game approached the hour mark.

Nigeria got a chance when Aminu Sadiq was given a long cross that hit his back and caused a coalition between Denmark goalkeeper Jeppe Hojbjerg and substitute Kasper Larsen.

The Europeans tried to find their rhythm and it almost paid off with five minutes left to play, when goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel could not get a hold of the ball in his danger area, but Denmark captain Lasse Vibe was unable to get his foot on the ball that was finally cleared away.

Two minutes later, Nigeria was close to scoring another goal, but Denmark defense was solid enough to prevent further havoc.

Three minutes was added, by referee Sandro Ricci, but the result remained unchanged as Nigeria booked passage to the semifinal of the football event of the Rio 2016 Olympics.
