01 March 2016, 18:06Israel Ojoko

Lagos - Veteran sport journalist Paul Etubong Bassey has been handed the mandate to take over at Akwa United following the sack of the management board, News24 can report.

Akwa Ibom state government announced the dissolution of the management and board of Akwa United following their ouster from the CAF Confederation Cup.

Akwa United, who won their first leg away fixture 1-0 against Vita Club de Mokanda of Congo, lost by the same margin in the return leg played at the weekend.

The game went into penalty shootout in Uyo, and the Nigerian club lost 6-5 to crash out in the preliminary stage, a development that did not go down well with the state government, owner of the side.

NFF Technical Committee member, Paul Bassey will head the side for three months before a new crew will be set up.

Players however trained on Tuesday at their home ground.
