Romania row as Steaua refuse to release players

25 January 2016, 21:45

Bucharest - Steaua Bucharest have refused to release six of its Romanian international players for a Euro 2016 training camp in Turkey, prompting an angry reaction from the national coach.

"It's a lack of fair-play, everyone has to respect the national team," said Romania manager Anghel Iordanescu on Monday.

"Our clubs are no longer competing in European competitions, neither Steaua nor anyone else, the only team left to represent the country is the national side."

Iordanescu urged the national federation to "carefully analyse the situation and take a hard line" against the Bucharest club, Mediafax agency reported.

Steaua boss Laurentiu Reghecampf defended his club's stance, blaming the internationals' no-show on a spate of injuries. Steaua are lying fourth in the Romanian first division, with three games of the season remaining.

The six stay-away players are goalkeeper Florin Nita, defenders Paul Papp and Alin Tosca, and midfielders Mihai Pintilii, Nicolae Stanciu and Adrian Popa.
