Ronaldo injured before key matches for Real Madrid

22 April 2016, 16:15

Madrid — Cristiano Ronaldo has pulled a muscle in his right leg and could miss critical matches in both the Spanish league and Champions League.

Real Madrid said Friday that medical tests revealed that Ronaldo had pulled a muscle in his right thigh during Wednesday's victory over Villarreal. The club did not specify how long it expects the Portugal forward to be sidelined.

Atletico Madrid, a title rival in both competitions, also has an injury problem. The club said Friday that center back Diego Godin had injured a muscle in his right leg.

Real Madrid visits crosstown rival Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, trailing league leader Barcelona and second-place Atletico by one point. The team, coached by Zinedine Zidane, then travels to England to face Manchester City in the first leg of the Champions League semifinals on Tuesday.

Ronaldo leads Madrid with 47 goals in 44 appearances this season.

Atletico will host Malaga on Saturday, and then hosts Bayern Munich in the Champions League semifinals on Wednesday.

"We have players who are playing well and are motivated," Atletico coach Diego Simeone said. "I hope Diego recovers soon, but we will go on with the players we have."
