Sports Minister sources funds for Dream Team

09 December 2015, 08:47

Abuja - Sports minister Solomon Dalung has directed the Director General of the National Sports Commission to source for funds to offset the outstanding match bonuses and allowances owed the national U23 team players and officials.

The team, which is currently in Senegal for the CAF U23 Africa Cup of Nations have not been paid their match allowances and bonuses dating back to the All Africa Games last September and News24 reported of the tension in the team’s camp before their group game against Egypt, with players reluctantly showing up for training.

The Nigeria Football Federation have consistently maintained they are cash strapped, and as a result are yet to meet their obligations as it regards the team.

They play hosts Senegal on Wednesday in one of the semi-final games for a place at next year’s Olympic Games in Brazil.

Meanwhile, in order to abate the tension in the camp over their unpaid allowances and perhaps to boost the player’s morale, head coach, Samson Siesta gifted the players $100 each after they secured their passage to the semifinals with the 0-0 draw against Algeria.
