2017 Lagos City Marathon targets 50 000 runners

Lagos - Organisers of the Lagos City Marathon are targeting 50 000 runners for the second edition.

The second edition will be held on February 11, 2017.

Lagos State governor Akinwunmi Ambode, while addressing journalist in a press conference ahead of the second edition, said the 2017 edition of the marathon is being planned to be bigger in all ramification.

While acknowledging the success of the first edition, Ambode said the second edition of the event will be bigger as they aim to make it become one of the best ten marathons in the world.

In order to achieve that, five, of the top ten marathoners in the world will be invited and contract to that effect will be signed this week.

“We are also using this as a platform to celebrate Lagos at 50. Celebrities are hereby encouraged to join,” Ambode said.

“While world-class facility will be available, we can also use this 2017 Lagos City Marathon as a means of charity to give back to the less-privileged in the society. And charity organisations are urged to take advantage of the opportunity.”

“There will be improved security, live transmission, and a mega-vision will be stationed in strategic places for non-runners to have a view of happenings. Certificate of honour, duly signed by me, will also be issued to all volunteers. “

The governor added that the Lagos State government os fully committed to the second edition of the Lagos City Marathon.

Over 20 000 runners submitted entries for the inaugural edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon held on February 6, 2016, News24 reported.

Singers Lil Kesh, Patoranking and Olamide were among celebrities who signed up for the 2016 edition.
