Borno plans to upgrade Elkanemi Sports Centre

02 July 2012, 13:05

Borno - Zanna Mustapha, the Deputy-Governor of Borno State, has  affirmed the administration’s plans to upgrade the El Kanemi Warriors Sports Centre, Maiduguri, to FIFA’s standard.

Mustapha said that the move became necessary following the promotion of El Kanemi FC to the elite Nigeria Premier League (NPL).

``The State Government will upgrade the football pitch and other facilities at the El Kanemi Warriors Sports Centre in Maiduguri.

``The objective is to meet the prevailing requirements for hosting NPL matches; now that El Kanemi has gained promotion,’’ Mustapha said.

He said already some contractors had supplied quotations for the upgrade of the centre.

``We have got some quotations from reputable firms for the upgrade of facilities like the score board, the football pitch among others.

``I believe that the contract will be awarded after due process had been carried out.’’

Mustapha added that the government was also looking at the possibilities of completing the abandoned Kano Road Multipurpose stadium for use by the club in its league campaign.

``We are looking at possibilities of obtaining some intervention fund for the completion of the multi billion naira stadium complex.

``But if the effort failed to yield the desired results, we will continue on our planned upgrade of facilities at the El Kanemi Warriors Sports Centre,’’

He also said the administration would ensure that adequate funds were approved to ensure that the club performed well in the forthcoming 2012/2013 season.

``We plan to assist in recruiting new and agile players in all departments of the team to strengthen the club.’’

El Kanemi Warriors was promoted to the Nigeria National League (NNL) after years of languishing at the lower division following its relegation in 2007.
