D’Tigers win Afro Basket

Tunis - The Nigerian men’s basketball team claimed its first ever senior continental title on Sunday when they defeated Angola in the final of the FIBA AfroBasket tournament in Rades, Tunisia.

D’Tigers defeated defending and 11-time champions Angola 74-65 in the final. The match was a repeat of the 2003 final which Angola won 86-65 in Alexandria, Egypt.

The victory also means Nigeria have qualified for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics along with Angola, third-placed Tunisia and fourth-placed Senegal.

The hosts, champions in 2011, defeated Senegal, five time victors, 82-73 in the third-placed play-off on Sunday.

Chaimberlain Oguchi was named the Most Valued Player of the tournament after scoring 19 points in the final and was named in the All-Star Five along with Nigeria teammate Al-Farouq Aminu.
