Calabar - GOtv announced that it will partner with the Cross River State Government as sponsors of the 5th Athletics and Swimming Championships for primary and secondary schools in the region.
The management of the digital pay-television announced the partnership at the Transcorp Hotel Calabar on Wednesday.
The championships involving athletes from 18 local governments in the state concludes on July 12 at the U.J. Esuene Stadium, Calabar.
Efe Obiomah, the Public Relations Manager of GOtv, commended the state government for its commitment to improving sport.
She said the government's objective to groom youths through sport was in line with MultiChoice Nigeria's sports promotion and development policy in the country.
Obiomah added that children were important audience of GOtv and that informed the decision to sponsor a competition for primary and secondary school children.
“GOtv currently offers four kiddies channels — Nickelodeon, Disney Junior, JimJam and Channel ED which entertain whilst also aiding learning and development,” Obiomah said.
She added that the sponsorship covered television coverage of the four day event and transmission via its SuperSport channels, staff and crew costs, as well as contribution to the funding of the event itself.
GOtv's total investment is believed to run into millions of naira.
Patrick Ugbe, commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, said government aimed to attract private sector investment.
“With the championships now in its fifth year, it is the belief of the Cross River Government that the partnership with GOtv and MultiChoice will be enduring,” Ugbe said.
