IBB canvasses early preparation for 2016 Olympics

17 August 2012, 10:15

Minna -  Nigeria's former military head of state, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, on Thursday called for early preparation for the Rio 2016 Olympics in Brazil to enhance the country's performance at the Games.

Babangida made the remark at his 71st birthday press briefing in Minna, stressing  that early preparation would forestall a repeat of Nigeria's woeful performance at the just concluded London 2012 Olympics.

The former military leader blamed the country's poor showing at the London Games on poor preparation and called for total overhaul of the sports sector.

``We should now start planning for the 2016 Olympics and the best time to do that is now.

``I think the administration of sports in Nigeria needs to be thoroughly overhauled to give us positive result,'' Babangida said.

He said the country’s sports administrators believed in last minute preparations, which had negatively affected the performance of athletes at the London Olympics.

Babangida said the country had the capability and human talents to win medals at any Olympics.
