Nigeria,Cuba partner on sports

27 May 2013, 11:09Henry Ifeanyi

Lagos - Nigeria and Cuba have signed a treaty to mutually cooperate in the area of sports development.

Sports Minister and Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Bolaji Abdulahi signed the treaty on behalf of Nigeria while the Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Hugo Ramos, signed on behalf of Cuba.

Ramos said Cuba would seek to solidify the existing bi-lateral ties between the two nations through exchange of manpower in boxing and athletics.

He said the treaty would address issues bordering on sports development with Nigeria, adding that both countries should strive to use sports and culture to build bridges of co-operation.

Abdullahi, who expressed optimism about the strategic benefits of the transatlantic partnership, said the agreement would foster co-operation and mutual understanding between the two countries.

He said in the spirit of the treaty, Nigeria and Cuba would share experiences to their mutual benefit in fields where each country was strong.

Nigeria had in the past enjoyed a robust technical support from Cuba which was also generous in making available its facilities to Nigerian athletes on training tour in preparation for a major competition.
