Lagos - Olympic bronze medallist Mary Onyali believes
Nigerian athletes will have a record-breaking Commonwealth Games campaign in
Glasgow later this month.
"Like we left for Bostwana unheralded for the second
edition of the Africa Youth Games and came back with many gold medals and
placed overall third too, Team Nigeria will again storm Glasgow this month for
the Commonwealth Games and by the special grace of God return home with gold
medal haul and one or two Games record, I am sure of that with God on our
side", she told Daily Sunsports in Abuja.
"The National Sports Commission has been working
underneath without any undue publicity and our athletes have been in camp all
this while but like I said the eventual positive results will show clearly how
well we have prepared for the Commonwealth Games. I am sure Nigerians would be
happy at the end of the day.
"First and foremost I give thanks to Almighty God and
the creator of heaven and earth for granting me good health and life to see
today. Also words, thought, emotions cannot be enough to express my gratitude
to Honourable Gbenga Elegbeleye for choosing me as his Special Adviser. I also
thank God for giving my boss the wisdom and the courage against all odds to
have invited me to work with him.
"A lot of Director Generals, a lot of Ministers have
come and gone since I retired from active sports but they never looked my way
despite contributing so much to the development and promotion of athletics in
this nation. I gave my all, my sweat and my blood, I have been hoping and
wishing that one day my knowledge as an athlete and everything that I have
achieved in sports will not go with me to the grave without passing it to the
next generation of athletes behind me.
