Abuja - The Chief Coach of the Ebonyi Sports Council, Dominic Ukwuome, said the overbearing pressure piled on Nigerian athletes could cause them to fail at the World Athletics Championships in Moscow.
Ukwuome said Nigerian athletes should be left to focus on their events without the burden of undue pressure.
He also went on to say similar pressure might be at fault for the country’s poor performance at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
“The anxiety to impress at all costs made them lose focus and wobble in
the face of stiff opposition from other athletes who were equally bent
on winning,” he said.
“Much hope was placed on Blessing Okagbare and Chika Chukwumerije to win medals for the country, but the undue pressure placed on the shoulders caused them to fail.”
