17 April 2015, 19:34

Bahrain - Kimi Raikkonen posted the fastest time ahead of Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel in the first practice session of the Bahrain Grand Prix on Friday.

In searing heat, Raikkonen clocked a best lap of 1 minute, 37.827 seconds, putting him .202 ahead of Vettel and .563 clear of Williams driver Valtteri Bottas.

Ferrari has started the season strongly, with Vettel winning the Malaysian GP and securing two other podium positions to apply early pressure on Mercedes pair Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, the defending champion and runner-up from last season.

Rosberg placed 15th in with Hamilton 16th.

It proved to be another frustrating day for struggling McLaren as Jenson Button stalled his car right at the start of the session.

There is a second practice later Friday.
