Sex PR idiot ruins race finish

30 September 2013, 12:00

Cape Town - World marathon record holder Wilson Kipsang's moment of joy was stolen by an intruder who used the occasion to promote prostitution.

Kipsang, 31, won the Berlin Marathon on Sunday in a new official best time of 2hrs 3 mins and 23 seconds.

He shaved 15 seconds off the previous world record set by compatriot Patrick Makau, who ran 2:03.38 over 42.195km in the German capital two years ago.

However, an intruder stole the show when he ran ahead of Kipsang just as he was approaching the finish line.

According to the LiveLeak.com website, the intruder - wearing a yellow shirt - used the occasion to promote a sleazy website that connects prostitutes with "gentlemen with high demands."

Kipsang though shrugged off the incident and said he was delighted to have broken the world record in a city he loves.

"I think in the last few kilometres I had the feeling it was on and I was feeling strong," Kipsang told AFP.

"My plan was to really push in the last few kilometres, I knew it would be a fight.

"I just wanted to make sure we had a good pace at the start and I knew the record was beatable.

"It was my first time racing here, it's a really nice course and a great city. I love it here!"

He collected the winner's cheque of €40 000 with a €50 000 bonus for the world record.
