22 June 2015, 14:32

Lagos - The president of Nigeria Wrestling Federation expects wrestlers to make a strong challenge for medals at the up-coming All Africa Games and 2016 Olympic Games.

Daniel Igali told the Mirror that the impressive performances recorded at the recently-concluded African Championships in Cairo, Egypt will spur the athletes to glory.

“I am very optimistic that with the performance of our wrestlers in Egypt, Nigeria will be going for medal haul at the All Africa Games,” he said.

“The athletes have shown that they are among the best in the continent and with the type of confidence they exhibited at the championship, we would be able to present up to 10 wrestlers for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro next year, from the expected performance of these wrestlers at the World Championships which would serve as the Olympic Qualifiers.”

Nigeria claimed a total of 10 medals in the Greco-roman and freestyle categories at the African Championships.

The All Africa Games take place in Brazzaville, Congo in September 2015, while the Olympic tale place in Rio de Janeiro in August 2016.
