10 candidates to run in Portugal's presidential election

30 December 2015, 17:35

Lisbon — Ten candidates — a record number — will stand in Portugal's presidential election next month.

The Constitutional Court said late Tuesday that each candidate had met the legal requirement of gathering, by one month ahead of the election, 7,500 signatures of support. The ballot is on Jan. 24. Previously, the highest number of candidates for head of state was six.

Under Portugal's political system the president has no executive power, which is held by the government, but is an influential voice.

The country's 9.7 million registered voters will choose a successor to Anibal Cavaco Silva, who has served the maximum of two consecutive five-year terms.

If no candidate obtains more than 50 percent of votes, a runoff vote between the two leading candidates will be held Feb. 14.
