3 dead after Kansas City shooting

14 April 2014, 06:35

Overland Park - Three people were shot and killed on Sunday afternoon in suburban Kansas City, and a spokesperson for a local hospital said a 15-year-old boy is in critical condition.

Overland Park city spokesperson Sean Reilly said two people died at the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Kansas City campus and one was killed at Village Shalom, which is a retirement community that is several blocks away from the centre.

Overland Park Fire Department spokesperson Jason Rhodes said on Sunday afternoon that one person of interest is in custody.

The Jewish Community Centre of Greater Kansas City in Overland Park posted on its Facebook page that a "shooting incident" happened near its White Theatre entrance and the building is on lockdown.

Overland Park Medical Centre spokesperson Christine Hamele says a 15-year-old boy who was brought from the scene of the Jewish Community Centre is in critical condition.

There is a heavy police presence at the campus, which spans several acres in an affluent area of Johnson County, Kansas. The entrance to the campus is blocked off.

Auditions for the KC SuperStar competition were scheduled to be held Sunday at the Jewish Community Center.

On Sunday afternoon, the website for KC SuperStar, which is a singing competition for high school students, said the auditions were cancelled.
