Beijing – Chinese authorities have set up 25 baby hatches across China allowing parents to abandon their children in a safe environment, Mirror reports.
Although the abandonment of children is illegal in China the baby hatches has helped to save many children, who many times have disabilities or illnesses that parents cannot afford to maintain.
The hatches consist of an incubator, parents press an alarm button after the babies are in the hatch and within ten minutes someone would retrieve the baby. This has been known to increase the chance of survival that the babies have. At one hatch, 79 babies were received in its first 15 days after opening.
Many people have been criticizing the hatches, saying that it encourages people to abandon their children but the health authorities have counter argued that the hatches provide a safe environment for something that would happen anyway.
