Dire times for Nigerian refugees in Cameroon

06 November 2015, 08:50Augustine Osayande

Abuja - The House of Representatives has mandated a number of committees to initiate urgent measures to relocate some Nigerians taking refuge in Cameroon.

The Committees mandated in line with the resolution of the Federal Government are those on Foreign Affairs, Diaspora and internally displaced persons (IDPS).

The House also charged National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to put necessary accommodation facilities in place for the returnees.

The development follows a motion sponsored by legislator  Nuhu Mohammed Sherif.

He lamented that IDPs faced hardships in the squalid refugee camps in Cameroon.

He urged the legislature to intervene to ameliorate the plights of Nigerians who were victims of terrorist attacks and sought refuge in the neighboring country.

"If timely action is not taken, most of them will die from outbreaks of epidemic and starvation," the lawmaker said.

Another member, Mojeed Alabi, said NEMA should also cater for citizens seeking refuge outside Nigeria.

"The should not to be confused by the term 'internally displaced' persons. It captures even Nigerians who are displaced but not within the country," Alabi said.
