Man charged after assaulting flight crew

20 April 2012, 11:02

Hong Kong - Hong Kong police charged a man after he allegedly assaulted crew on a Cathay Pacific flight and needed to be subdued with the help of passengers, a spokesperson said on Friday.

The 52-year-old foreigner, whose nationality was not revealed, was detained after the flight from Bangkok carrying 398 passengers landed at Hong Kong International Airport on Monday evening, the police spokesperson said.

"He has been charged for behaving in a disorderly manner on board an aircraft. He will appear in court on May 2," she said.

The incident came to light after media reports claimed the incident could have been a "terrorist attack".

One of the two passengers who helped subdue the offender was reportedly honoured for bravery in his native Mongolia, where the incident was depicted as a terrorist attempt to crash the aircraft.

Cathay said in a statement that there was "no evidence whatsoever to suggest the case involved a terrorist attack".
