Man has hiccups for a year after night out

05 September 2013, 19:03

London - An Irish man has had non-stop hiccups since he returned from a night out – more than a year ago, the Mirror reports.

Daniel Clavin, the 37-year-old software worker from Roscommon, said: “They’ve taken over my life. I woke up with them one morning after a stag do."

The chronic condition is called synchronous diaphragmatic flutter in medical terms and it has forced Clavin into the spare room so his wife Susan can get sleep at night.

Clavin says he has given up drinking, had endoscopies, a cat scan, changed his diet, taken tranquillisers, visited a chiropractor and even tried every known wives’ tale, but he is yet to find the cure.

“I’ve no idea why they started – I’d had more to drink than for some time but nothing out of the ordinary, just the usual mix of beer and spirits,” he said.

Clavin now waits for an MRI scan as he fears his condition may be linked to a brain tumour, having read about a similar case.

“We are desperate because the hiccups are ruining our lives. They are getting him down,” his wife Susan said.
