Rocket fired from Gaza says Israel

24 June 2015, 08:16

Tel Aviv - A rocket was fired from the Gaza Strip towards southern Israel, officials said.

"Sirens sounded in Zikim, Karmia, Netiv HaAsara and Yad Mordechai," four coastal towns within 5km of the northern border of the Gaza Strip, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) tweeted from their spokesperson account.

No one was injured, IDF spokesperson Peter Lerner tweeted. In response, the "IDF struck the rocket launcher & confirmed a hit," he posted.

Three rockets launched in the first week of this month were claimed by a Salafist group calling itself the Omar Brigades, which identifies with ISIS.

The group said the rockets were revenge for a crackdown by Hamas, the Islamist movement in de facto control of the Gaza Strip, against Salafists active in the coastal enclave.

The Omar Brigades have said they will not abide by the truce that followed 50 days of ground clashes in Gaza last year, which left around 2 200 Palestinians and 70 Israelis dead.
