Toll rises in Batman mass shooting

20 July 2012, 12:32

Cape Town – The number of dead during an attack at the Century Aurora 16 Movie Theatre in a mall in Denver, Colorado has risen to 12 with up to 50 wounded, say reports.

A man has been arrested by police, who according to SkyNews, have said the gunman acted alone.

It had been earlier reported that a second assailant was on the run.

The news channel reported that the gunman had a “rifle, handgun and another weapon”. The man is reported to have been wearing body armour and what looked to be a gas mask.

The masked gunmen reportedly opened fire after 30 minutes of the showing and also set off a smoke or tear gas bomb.

Brenda Stuart, from 850 KOA Radio, told Sky News: "This started with a midnight showing of the new Dark Knight movie and the theatres were packed that were showing this movie.

"People inside tell us they thought it was part of the movie. They heard what they thought were firecrackers, loud bangs and all of a sudden they saw the bullets flying.
