Cracks emerge in Kenya’s opposition alliance - reports

12 April 2016, 21:38

Nairobi - A storm is brewing in Kenya's main opposition, CORD, regarding the coalition's flag bearer for the upcoming presidential polls scheduled for August 2017.

All the three co-principals - Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang’ula - wanted to be in the ballot.

It is feared that the chaos could split the east African country's main opposition alliance.

Some elders within the coalition have vowed to support no other candidate but Kalonzo, saying he was the right person to vie for the post, Daily Nation reported.

According to the 2013 pre-election pact, Odinga was to run for one term and then step down for Kalonzo, a pact that no longer seems to hold water after reports emerged that Odinga's ODM party had already trashed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

According to Standard, ODM governors and MPs were backing Odinga for president.
