Fraud: Malawi's deputy ambassador to Ethiopia arrested

25 May 2016, 21:27

Lilongwe - Police officials in Malawi have arrested Doreen Kapanga, the country's deputy ambassador to Ethiopia, in connection with the alleged theft of K293 million from the embassy.

According to Nyasa Times, a preliminary report indicated that at least K184 million had been stolen over a period of 12 months.

The fraud was first detected when the first secretary for administration Fletcher Chowe wrote a $30 000 cheque in his name and it was signed by Kapanga.

The development saw both Chowe and Kapanga being suspended and recalled from the mission.

Police confirmed Kapanga's arrest, stating that more information would be released on the matter once it was made available.

The development followed from an announcement that government had recalled 82 diplomats from foreign missions due to reduction plans instituted by the ministry of foreign affairs and international co-operation, according to The Nation

The number of Malawian diplomats on foreign missions was set to be reduced even further by the end of June next year, with 19 foreign missions currently on the country's books.
