Malawi diplomats face eviction after broke govt fails to pay rent

06 June 2016, 21:07

New York - Malawi diplomats in New York are reportedly facing evictions after their cash strapped government failed to pay rent, a report said on Monday.

According to the Nyasa Times a number of other diplomats were facing similar threats.

Malawian diplomat in the US, Chrissie Mahuka had received a warrant of eviction from her landlords, Collins Enterprises, the report said.

News 24 recently reported that the southern African country's finance minister Goodall Gondwe admitted that the country was facing cash problems.

Unveiling a $1.6bn national budget for the fiscal year running from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017, Gondwe warned that the southern African country was facing a financial crisis.

"We will implement the 2016/17 national budget at the time we are facing a financial crisis," Gondwe was quoted saying at the time.
