Malawi's ruling party suspends treasurer over sex scandal

22 March 2016, 15:11

Lilongwe - Malawi's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has suspended its treasurer for the north of the country after he was found with his pants down in bed with a married woman.

According to Nyasa Times, Happy Kumwenda was caught red-handed in the throes of passion with Mirriam Chembe Mkandawire, a married woman who also happened to be his mistress.

A statement by DPP Secretary General Ecklen Kudontoni revealed that the party was against Kumwenda's conduct, adding that "lewd, libidinous and indecent behaviour" would not be entertained.

Kudontoni said that an internal investigation into the matter was ongoing.

"Kumwenda will be called to a disciplinary hearing. He needs to be heard as well before disciplining him," Kudontoni said.

The couple caused quite a stir following the saucy soiree, with police officials having to intervene in order to prevent a crowd from administering mob justice on the lovers.

Malawi24 reported earlier that Kumwenda was well known in Mzuzu for "opening his zip carelessly".
