Massive manhunt for gunman who killed two at Tel Aviv bar

02 January 2016, 07:03

Tel Aviv - Israeli police were hunting door-to-door for an Arab-Israeli gunman that fired into a busy bar in central Tel Aviv on Friday, killing two people and wounding at least six.

The attacker was a 29-year-old Israeli citizen from the north of the country, according to media reports.

The suspect's father contacted authorities after seeing news reports and discovering the gun he used for his security job was missing, Haaretz newspaper reported.

Police sealed off roads around the bar and were searching buildings and apartments nearby, as well as examining CCTV footage for images of the shooter, spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld said.

Cameras inside a store adjacent to the bar recorded a man dressed in black buying vegetables. He then pulls a gun from his backpack, exits the store and can be seen opening fire in the direction of the bar.

Another video shot inside the bar showed patrons scrambling for cover amid the hail of bullets.

Haaretz reported that two other people in the bar were hospitalised in serious condition.

Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai said the attack was likely terrorist-related. However, police said the motive of the shooter was still unknown.

More than 20 Israelis and 140 Palestinians have died in a wave of violence that has engulfed the region since early October.
