MDC takes minister to court over suspension of Harare mayor

21 April 2016, 22:00

Harare - Zimbabwe's main opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) led by Morgan Tsvangirai, has taken Local Government Minister Saviour Kasukuwere to court for interfering with the work of the Harare City Council, reports New Zimbabwe.

The development came after Kasukuwere suspended Harare Mayor Bernard Manyenyeni on allegations of contravening a number of the Urban Councils Acts.

According to NewsDay, Manyenyeni’s suspension followed his recent fall-out with the minister after he (Manyenyeni) appointed former banker James Mushore as the city's town clerk.

Mushore was allegedly a member of the MDC.

Manyenyeni confirmed his suspension as both a councillor and Harare's mayor.

"Just to let you know that I have received a letter from the minister that I am suspended both as Councillor and Mayor with immediate effect,” Manyenyeni was as quoted saying.

Manyenyeni, an MDC councillor, became the city’s mayor in 2013 after beating Zanu-PF candidate Musatye Gwasira by a slight margin.
