Picture of gay Malawian man goes viral after brutal attack

09 February 2016, 14:09

Lilongwe – A picture of a gay man who was brutally attacked in Malawi has gone viral, with many describing the attack as a "hate crime".

Nyasa Times reported that human rights activist Billy Mayaya posted the picture of Kelvin Gomani, an employee at a local hotel in the capital Lilongwe, on Facebook after he was attacked.

Gomani, a well known young man, who was arrested last year for having sex with another man, was attacked by an unknown gang who accused him of being gay.

The attack on Gomani came weeks after the United States Special Envoy for the Human Rights of LGBTI persons, Randy Berry, was in the southern African country to support the end of the discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people in the country.

President Peter Mutharika also made a call recently for people to respect the rights of those in the LGBTI community.

Mutharika said this after the spokesperson for the People’s Party, Ken Msonda, demanded that homosexuals be killed, referring to them as being worse than dogs and "sons and daughters of the devil".
