Secret plot to overthrow Malawian president revealed

08 February 2016, 14:25

Lilongwe – A strategy to overthrow current Malawian President Peter Mutharika has been revealed amid high political tensions in the southern Africa country.

According to Nyasa Times, Lazarus Chakwera, the leader of the opposition and Malawi Congress Party (MCP), has been having discussions with a group of people aimed at coming up with a plot to oust Mutharika.

The United States Ambassador to Malawi,  Viginia Palmer, allegedly endorsed the discussions.

It is believed that those who are part of the plot have since been put under surveillance by the government after key documents were confiscated.

The government spokesperson and police have, however, refused to comment on the issue, the report said, adding that the deadline toppling of Mutharika's government had been set at June 2016.

Mutharika and his government have in recent months been receiving criticism over the country's continued economic hardships.

Many fear that if the group's plot succeeds, it would result in a civil war.

The country has not been plagued by war since it attained independence in 1964.
