UN's Ban condemns deadly Lake Chad attack

06 December 2015, 19:17

New York - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday condemned a triple suicide bombing on an island in Lake Chad, blamed on Boko Haram jihadists, that killed more than two dozen people and wounded scores more.

"The secretary-general condemns the triple suicide attack on the island of Koulfoua on the Chadian side of Lake Chad on December 5 2015," read the statement released by Ban's office.

"These despicable acts demonstrate yet again the brutality of Boko Haram," the statement added, offering condolences to the families of those killed and injured.

In recent months Boko Haram, which earlier this year declared allegiance to the Islamic State group, has stepped up attacks and suicide bombings on Chadian villages in the lake region that lies close to the border with Nigeria.

On November 9 Chad declared a state of emergency in the flashpoint lake region, which straddles Nigeria, Cameroon and Niger.
