Zambia: Xenophobic attacks due to political discontent, says Guy Scott

25 April 2016, 21:59

Lusaka – Former Zambian president Guy Scott, has said that the xenophobic attacks in the southern African country were a result result of "political discontent".

According to The Post, over 250 people were arrested for looting and rioting mostly in high density areas over rumours of ritual murders last week.

The violence started in Zingalume and George slums in the capital Lusaka last week on Monday, in the wake of the murders of at least seven people, whose body parts such as ears, hearts and penises had been removed.

Foreigners were accused of being linked to the killings.

President Edgar Lungu issued a special operational order last Wednesday to deploy over 400 soldiers to patrol various townships in Lusaka.

Scott said the violence was due to citizens feeling like they had no access to primary needs.

He also questioned if Zambia had the ability to protect foreign nationals living in the country.
